Growing up near Mwaluganje, I had many tales regarding kifaru the Rhino.
I have seen women who still carry the scars of rhino attacks because
they happened to be at the river at the wrong time. All over the world,
the big five are at increased risk of extinction. Who is responsible for this?
Human beings and their greedy ways are. The death of Sudan, this week,
which was the only male northern white rhino is the highest pointer that efforts to
conserve animal species has not been very successful. There are people perhaps
who compromise the systems that protect flora and fauna and occasion long
lasting damage. We at the Konversant, we recommend that wildlife be treated like
any other asset. How about conducting census in the wild on regular basis and these
numbers be followed up for accountability? If a new manager comes to Masai Mara,
does she/he get handed over the animals as we do in other sectors..like ...look here
" we have 10k antelopes, 5k lizards, 2k rhinos." After such a manager serving at that
station, the same process of accountability and handing over should be done. In simple
terms, the people in charge of our wildlife should be accountable to the nation to the last
antelope and the last crocodile. The death of Sudan indicates that humans have abused
their dominance given them by God. For this, the human race will suffer. With these words
I mourn Sudan.
The Uhuru-Raila handshake has been spoken of at length and very widely as well. It has been
difficult to decipher what exactly it means in the realm of politics in Kenya. Importantly, that
public show of "affection" has given Kenyans a shelter against political rain that has been beating
down on East African big man, albeit temporarily.
Has the nation healed?
There has been noise, whispers, then silence. Those who have presented a healed nation theory
have not backed it up with anything tangible. I find this school of thinking lacking because
the history of Kenya has shown such periods of false peace in the past. This thin skin readily
peels off whenever an election nears. Worse of all the working relationship between the Kenyan
opposition and the ruling party jeopardizes the reform agenda that Raila Odinga has been
advocating for over the years. It is not clear how the electoral reforms will be steered from
now hence forward. It must never be lost on the Kenyan public that the tribal hatred has been
cemented more by perceived electoral malpractices that have made it impossible for people
outside government to win elections. In my opinion the two elections of 2017 were of really low
quality and many Kenyans cannot verify whether their will was indeed reflected in the process or not.
It is my desire that an electoral process be as clear and as transparent as possible. The out come
should be simple to verify. The marriage between Jubilee party and the National Super Alliance
signals a lowering of guard in matters reform. Electoral reforms was one of the key concerns of the
Super Alliance. Lack of these reforms means that future elections could still be disputed
and peace be undermined. An unjust election is the worst form of deprivation on a population.
Heaven blesses only and only a justly elected government. This is the mandate of heaven which
democracies cite as grounds for the right of citizens to revolutionize how they are governed.
The bridge towards this goal in the case of Kenya appears to be irretrievably broken.
Police salaries dispute...
This kind of debate is most unfortunate especially at a time when lecturers strike is ongoing.
Kenya desires to a professional police service. This cannot be achieved if we are not prepared
to pay our officers well.
Wetangula ouster...
I really can't place a finger on the significance of this. It looks like those brawls that
our politicians are so accustomed to.The culture of using numbers to bully others
is getting accepted as way of political life. This is how "small communities" suffer
in Kenya because the "big ones" don't care that much. The much talked about
inclusiveness appears to be a very shallow concept to politicians. What amazes
me however, is the soft approach adopted by ANC and FORD KENYA.
ODM has indicated that it is ready for divorce at all costs, but their partners are
praying that the Lord will change their(ODM) hearts soon . What a bad strategy.
Africa as one market....
This is a good move. By SADC, COMESA and EAC coming together it means
that African governments will manage to lock in a lot of wealth within. This is indeed
good for African citizens. If initiatives like these are sustained I think the menace of
desperate beings wafting across the Red sea to Europe will be curtailed. To sustain this,
a lot of discipline is required. Corruption. Bad elections. Civil wars.Brutal governance.
Tribalism. Religious extremism. All these must go.
