US moves its embassy
to Jerusalem…
For some time, the world was deluded that Trump wasn’t that
bad.
We are now beginning to see the primary Trump colours.
The Middle East peace process has been undermined
greatly in the last few days. It will take many days to cool
down the situation there. Read together with withdrawal
from Iran nuke deal, we have a fiasco. The fact that EU
is hold on the deal, US will likely look bad and a spoiler,
especially now that Pyongyang appears to back off from
the Korean summit.
A dam breaks apart in
Solai, Nakuru and deaths follow…
What a tragedy. Rain should be life giving.
It is a pity that Kenyans can suffer to the extent of losing
lives.
There is trauma and defeat in many areas of Kenya,
in highlands and lowlands. The Solai case, reading from the
landscape, was a tragedy in waiting. Government has a duty
to ensure safety of all citizens at all times. The response
to the
disaster was also painfully slow. Perhaps more lives could
have been
saved. This gets one thinking about many hazards that lie in
waiting
behind the backs of many Kenyans. There is poor supervision
of water
sources which means contamination may go undetected for
days.
Activities around water catchment areas has affected
sustainability
of water. There has been efforts in the recent past to plant
trees across
the country. Methinks it’s time to bring back the permanent
presidential
commission on
afforestation and soil erosion, which was key in environmental
conservation during the Moi regime. Across the country, we
have Kenyans
working in farms and industries which are rarely supervised
for compliance
with safety regulations. The Solai tragedy points to a need
for disaster preparedness
among populations regardless of locality.

Lecturers strike…
This sounds really bad. I do not see any urgency in
resolving
this strike. It is not easy to tell how long this will last.
College students have missed studies for months now.
This will definitely affect course completion for many
students.
Considering the fact that since last year all qualifying
students
were absorbed into public Universities, there is a huge
decline in student
numbers. Therefore this might have affected the demand for
lecturers
and therefore affecting their bargaining power. I do not
expect anybody
to win in this scenario.
The fact that the ministry of education has made
public its intention to hire teachers for primary and
secondary schools,
it shows clearly what the government’s line of thinking is.
NYS II…
There is nothing to be surprised about. It has become quite
predictable that
a scandal may ring anywhere anytime in Nairobi. Billions
have become the new
standard of scandals. It is such a horrible thing that
projects meant to benefit the
youth can be used as avenues for looting. It is utter
betrayal. While very little
has happened to the suspects of previous theft, it looks
like the current lot may
find themselves in
the frying pan. This case may also be the first test for the new
Director of public prosecutions. This case also will be
crucial in finding where the
pulse of the opposition is since the Raila Uhuru handshake.
Cuban doctors arrive
next month…
Yes. This goes ahead despite local doctors being unhappy
about the deal.
The union of doctors in Kenya has expressed displeasure
about the deal
claiming that there are enough doctors in the country and
that the only
thing that is required is to employ more because the
availability of Kenyan
doctors cannot be
disputed. This stance may jeopardize the success of the
program since Kenyan doctors are expect to play a key role
in the project.
I mean who will show them around if it is not Kenyan
doctors. The preferential
arrangements set for the coming doctors will most likely
spark more activism
along these lines.
Many African countries have imported medical specialist in the recent years.
Fidel Castro, leader of the Cuban revolution used to send
thousands of doctors in the late 50s
to such countries as Namibia, Zimbabwe and South Africa to
aid African population
in their liberation efforts. To date African leaders and their
families find it favourable
to seek medical
attention abroad. Citizens remain poorly served at public health facilities.
No drugs. Long queues at facilities. Absentee medics. Wrong
diagnosis and sometimes stale drugs.
Private hospitals remain out of reach for most peasants due to
high costs involved.
Computer and cyber
crimes law…
Kenyan legislature has yet again produced a vague piece of
legislation. The law
Purports to punish publishers of fake or false information,
creators of child pornography
and such other ills. It leaves one wondering whether there
was any input from professional bodies
or even public in general. A key question remains : who
decides what constitutes fake or false
information. East African countries have shown increased interest in legislating
against Internet
related crimes. A common thread has been that of targeting bloggers and
media houses that are deemed critical of government.
No equal sharing of
matrimonial property upon divorce…
As someone who has learnt to see my parents as equal to
each other,
I find this ruling retrogressive. I wish a successful appeal
of that ruling.
Are you fasting…?

most common principle
